The Adidas Superstar was introduced in 1969 as the first low-top basketball shoe featuring an all-leather upper and the now-famous rubber shell toe. With its rubber toe protection and non-marking sole, the shoe grabbed the attention of many players from the NCAA and NBA, most notably Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The classic Superstar II features a soft tumbled leather upper, a rubber cupsole with herringbone traction design, and a die-cut EVA insert for added comfort. Over time, the Superstar II became so recognized, it was worn more as a casual shoe, rather than for sports.
